16 Things Past Guests Wish They’d Known Before Their First European River Cruise

AmaWaterways River Cruises

If you’re planning your first European river cruise – whether on the Danube, Rhine, Seine, or Douro – there are a few insider tips that can make a big difference. From what to pack to when to arrive, small decisions can dramatically impact your overall experience.

River cruising is one of the easiest, most comfortable, and most “wow” ways to experience Europe… but there are a few things that past guests say would have made their first trip even smoother.

So we went straight to the source.

In a recent Facebook thread with over 300 past river cruise travelers commenting, someone asked:

“If you could have known something that would have made your first AmaWaterways cruise easier or better, what would it be?”

And the responses were GOLD.

Here are the most common tips – the ones people kept repeating over and over – plus a few “I would’ve never thought of that” gems.

Pack lighter than you think you need

This was the #1 comment by far.

River cruise travelers repeatedly said they overpacked… and then realized that their ship makes it incredibly easy to pack less.

Many guests said they wished they had:

  • packed fewer outfits
  • worn things more than once
  • used the onboard laundry service earlier (and more than once)
  • + some river cruise ships even have free laundry facilities onboard!

Yellow Umbrella Tip:

As an avid “carry on only” traveler, I always bring versatile pieces in just a few colors that mix and match easily, and plan to do laundry mid-cruise (or more often). River cruising is all about simple, easy, and active days. You truly do not have to pack more than 3 or 4 days of outfit changes. No one is going to care if you wear the same outfit more than once!

Pack for ALL types of weather (yes, even in the same week)

A surprising number of people said they experienced multiple seasons in one cruise.

One guest described:

  • hot weather in Amsterdam
  • cold rainy days in Germany
  • cool days… then hot again in Switzerland

So even if you’re going in spring or summer, don’t assume it’ll be warm every day.

Bring layers. Always.

Bring TWO pairs of good walking shoes

This was another top repeated theme – and it’s a big one.

People didn’t just say “bring good walking shoes.”

They said:

“Bring two good pairs… ours got soaked walking in a monsoon for three hours.”

Because here’s the thing: if you only have one pair and they get wet, you’re in trouble for the next few days.

Best advice from the thread:

✔️ 2 pairs of supportive walking shoes
✔️ bring waterproof shoes if you can
✔️ flat comfy shoes for onboard (I personally bring my Rothy’s driver loafers for this)

AmaWaterways River Cruises,

Start walking more before your cruise

Most of the best river cruise lines include at least a guided walking tour daily – and many guests said they were shocked at how many steps they got in.

Several people said they were glad they increased their steps before the cruise, and others said they wished they had.

Quick reality check:
Even a “relaxed” river cruise day can easily hit 10,000–15,000 steps.

Bring a well-stocked mini medical kit

One of the most practical tips from the thread:

“Bring a well stocked medical kit.”

Not because river cruising is dangerous – but because you don’t want to be hunting down a pharmacy in a small town when you’re tired, jet lagged, and on a schedule.

Consider packing:

  • blister pads
  • pain reliever
  • cold medicine
  • stomach meds
  • band-aids
  • allergy meds
  • a small packet of electrolyte powder

Arrive at least ONE day early (2 - 3 is even better) and stay at least ONE day later

This tip came up constantly.

River cruise guests strongly recommended arriving early because:

  • flights get delayed
  • luggage gets lost
  • jet lag is real
  • it’s stressful arriving same-day

The most common advice was:

✔️ arrive 1 day early at a minimum
✔️ 2–3 nights early if you want a stress-free start and want to see more of the area

Many travelers also said they wished they stayed longer after the cruise.

River cruises are amazing… but they can go by fast. A post-cruise night or two gives you time to:

  • explore without a schedule
  • enjoy the city at your own pace

decompress before flying home

Consider the pre-cruise land program (especially for first-timers)

This one came up more than I expected.

Past guests said the pre-cruise add-on was worth it because:

  • you meet other travelers early
  • you meet the cruise director
  • you have extra time to adjust to the time zone
  • you start the cruise feeling rested instead of rushed

Research the towns ahead of time - and don’t feel obligated to do every tour

The included tours are usually great.

But a LOT of people said their favorite moments were when they:

  • explored on their own
  • wandered into a shop
  • sat at a café
  • focused on what they cared about

One guest said it best:

“The tours were nice, but going out on our own and taking time to see what we were interested in was great. Don’t feel obligated to stick with the tour group.”

Don’t feel trapped by ship meals - eat local when something looks amazing

Most river cruise dining is excellent – but…

But one of the most charming tips in the whole thread was:

“Don’t feel trapped by the onboard food. If you’re out and about and see something interesting, go for it.”

Think:

  • pretzels in Germany
  • pastries in Vienna
  • treats at Christmas markets
  • wine tastings in small towns

You’re not “wasting money.” You’re maximizing the experience.

Split clothes between bags if you’re traveling with someone

This is a PRO traveler move.

One guest said their friend’s bag was misplaced and didn’t reach the ship for 3 days.

If you’re traveling with a spouse or friend, split your items so each person has:

  • a few outfits
  • underwear
  • basic toiletries

That way, if one bag gets delayed, you still have enough to enjoy the trip.

Prepay tips (it’s one less thing to think about)

This tip was short, sweet, and popular:

“Prepay tips.”

It’s not required – but many people said it made the trip feel smoother because they weren’t thinking about it at the end.

Don’t overthink every detail - river cruising is the easy way to do Europe

This was one of the most emotionally relieving comments in the whole thread:

“Do not worry so much about all the details and try to plan every last second. Once you are in the hands of the river cruise team, all is well. Enjoy your trip!”

YES.

River cruising is built for travelers who want:

  • luxury
  • structure
  • support
  • but still freedom

If you’re an active traveler, pack workout clothes (you’ll actually use them)

A lot of people mentioned being surprised by how many wellness options some of the cruises (especially AmaWaterways) offers.

Guests said there’s often:

  • yoga
  • stretching classes
  • a small fitness room
  • spin classes on some ships

Even if you’re not a “gym person,” packing workout clothes gives you options – especially on slower days.

If you’re cruising in winter, rethink the balcony upgrade

This was a really smart money-saving tip.

One guest said:

“If traveling in the winter on the Danube I would not have paid for a double balcony room. We never even opened the balcony doors.”

Christmas river cruises are so port-heavy that many people aren’t in their rooms much anyway –  and in winter, you may not use the balcony at all.

Research public holidays in the countries you’re visiting

This is one of those tips that can make a huge difference.

One traveler shared:

“We were in Budapest and Vienna on national holidays. EVERY restaurant and shop was closed. Very disappointing.”

River cruise itineraries are fixed, so it’s worth checking:

  • national holidays
  • major religious holidays
  • local festivals

For our Egypt trip, we avoided Ramadan for this reason!

Sometimes it’s amazing – and sometimes it means everything is shut down.

Consider traveling in the less popular months

A number of travelers said they loved cruising in February and March because:

  • ships were half full
  • towns weren’t crowded
  • the vibe was calmer

If you’re flexible on timing, shoulder season river cruising can be a dream.

Bonus: The #1 “I Wish I’d Done This” Comment…

So many people posted some version of:

“I would have taken my first river cruise sooner!”

Honestly… fair. 😄
