Christmas Market River Cruises

The Most Sought-After Sailing in River Cruising

Handcrafted ornaments you will pull out every December for the rest of your life. Snow-dusted castle ruins reflected in the river below. A Christmas market river cruise is not just a holiday trip. It is a holiday trip. And it sells out faster than any other sailing on the calendar.

2026 sailings are nearly full. 2027 itineraries are open and booking fast. 2028 is already moving: Celebrity is 40% sold. We recommend starting the conversation now.

River cruise experiences typically start from $4,500 per person.

There is nothing else quite like a European Christmas market

Some markets have been running for more than 700 years. The markets of Nuremberg, Vienna, Strasbourg, and Cologne are not tourist attractions that happen to be festive. They are living expressions of centuries-old tradition. The vendors are locals. The crafts are handmade. The recipes for the gluhwein and lebkuchen have been passed down through generations. When you step ashore from a river cruise ship into the middle of one, you are not just watching Europe celebrate the holidays. You are celebrating with it.

This is what separates a Christmas market river cruise from every other holiday experience. You dock in the heart of each city, steps from the market squares, and walk off the ship into the festivity. Then you walk back, have a great dinner with friends, and watch the lights of the next city appear through your stateroom window as the ship sails on through the night.

One trip. Multiple countries. The greatest Christmas markets in the world. Every detail is handled before you board.

The Rhine, Danube & Seine? An Honest Comparison

This is the question we get asked most when it comes to Christmas market cruising. These rivers are extraordinary. All offer something unique and specific. The right choice depends on what your group is looking for.

Uniworld River Cruises Christmas Market

The Danube: Budapest to Regensburg or Passau

For many travelers the Danube is the superior Christmas market itinerary. The cities are grander: Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Linz, Regensburg. The architecture is more imperial. The cultural range is wider, spanning Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, and Germany in a single journey. Vienna’s Christkindlmarkt in front of the Rathaus, set against its Gothic city hall, is one of the most beautiful public spaces in Europe in any season, let alone December. The Danube is also the more forgiving choice for groups with diverse interests.

AmaWaterways, Avalon, Riverside, Uniworld, and Viking all offer Danube Christmas market itineraries for 2026 and 2027.

Best for: Culture lovers, groups who want iconic European capitals, those for whom Budapest and Vienna are bucket-list cities.

The Rhine: Amsterdam to Basel

The Rhine is the other great Christmas market river. The classic route moves from Amsterdam through Cologne, Koblenz, Rudensheim, Strasbourg, and Basel. It passes through the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage stretch of the river where medieval castle ruins sit on nearly every clifftop. Cologne runs six simultaneous markets across the city, each with its own theme. Strasbourg has been running its market since 1570 and still feels like it belongs to the city rather than to tourism.

Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Riverside, and Uniworld all operate Rhine Christmas market itineraries for 2026 and 2027.

Best for: Couples, German history and culture enthusiasts, groups who want Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt as a centerpiece.

The Rhine and Main: Basel to Nuremberg

For groups that want to go deeper into Germany’s Christmas market heartland, this itinerary extends the Rhine journey inland through Frankfurt and along the Main River to Nuremberg, home of the Christkindlesmarkt, which has run continuously since 1628. Viking debuted its new Christmas on the Rhine and Main itinerary in 2026, sailing from Basel to Nuremberg with stops at all the above.

Best for: Repeat Rhine travelers, German history and culture enthusiasts, groups for whom Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is the centerpiece.

The Seine: Paris and Normandy

Paris at Christmas is in its own category. The lights on the Champs-Elysees. The markets at La Defense and the Trocadero. Tauck debuted a Seine holiday itinerary to immediate sellout and is returning it for 2026. Uniworld’s Magical Parisian Holiday adds Rouen’s Christmas market and a cider farm in Vernon, a distinctly French take on the holiday season. If your group’s instinct is France rather than Germany, the Seine delivers something the Rhine and Danube simply cannot.

Best for: France lovers, Paris first-timers and returning visitors, groups drawn to French food, wine, and culture.

Which Cruise Line Is Right for Your Christmas Market Cruise?

Not all Christmas market cruises are created equal, and the line you choose shapes the onboard experience as much as the itinerary does. Here is an honest assessment of how each major line approaches the holiday season.

avalon waterways

Avalon Waterways

Avalon’s signature feature is its Panorama Suite stateroom: an 11-foot-wide wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that opens completely, with a bed positioned to face the river directly. Beyond the staterooms, Avalon includes an unusually generous excursion program at no additional cost, which matters for groups with guests at different budget levels. For groups where budget range within the party is a real consideration, Avalon makes it possible for everyone to travel together without anyone feeling the difference.

Best for: Active groups with varied budgets, guests who prioritize cabin design and river views.

AMAWaterways logo

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways Christmas market sailings sell out every year. Their 2023, 2024, and 2025 departures filled completely. The onboard experience is built around food, wine, and a social atmosphere that encourages guests to linger. The signature twin-balcony staterooms give guests a French balcony on one side and a full outdoor balcony on the other. For groups where the onboard experience is as important as the markets ashore, AmaWaterways is one of our most consistent recommendations.

Riverside logo

Riverside Luxury Cruises

Riverside is the line we recommend when a group wants something genuinely refined and does not need the name recognition of the major brands. Their ships are smaller, which means your group represents a meaningfully larger share of the total passengers. Riverside specializes in itineraries that reach ports the larger ships cannot access. Their food is outstanding, consistently among the highest-rated of any line our guests have sailed.

Best for: Groups seeking intimacy, guests for whom food quality is a top priority.

Uniworld logo

Uniworld

Every Uniworld ship is designed as a floating boutique hotel with original art and unique interiors. The holiday sailings include the Danube Holiday Markets, the Magical Parisian Holiday on the Seine, and the Belgian Holiday Markets itinerary. The pricing is among the most inclusive in river cruising: premium spirits, wine, shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and onboard gratuities are all covered.

Best for: Groups for whom the onboard experience is the centerpiece, those who want everything included.

Viking Logo

Viking

Viking’s Christmas market sailings are consistently executed and well-organized, which matters when you are coordinating a group of 20 or more people through multiple countries in December. The brand recognition does some of the recruiting work for you when gathering guests who may be skeptical about trying river cruising for the first time. Viking offers Christmas market itineraries on the Rhine, Rhine and Main, and Danube for 2026 and 2027.

Best for: First-time Christmas market cruisers, groups with a wide range of river cruise experience.

The Single Most Important Thing to Know About Christmas Market Cruises

Christmas market sailings are the fastest-selling itinerary in river cruising. AmaWaterways filled every Christmas market departure in 2023, 2024, and 2025 completely. Some sailings sell out within days of opening for a new year. The best cabin categories on the most sought-after itineraries disappear 12 to 18 months before departure.

For groups, the stakes are higher. Group contracts require holding a block of cabins. The earlier we secure your contract, the more cabin configurations are available and the better your group’s position on the ship.

For 2026: Most itineraries have very limited availability remaining. Contact us now and we will tell you honestly what is left.

For 2027: This is the window. Itineraries are open, cabin selection is strong, and early-booking promotions are available. Starting today is the right answer.

For 2028: Celebrity and Viking have already opened 2028 sailings. Celebrity is 40% sold. This is an active booking window for groups that want the best available space.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a Christmas market river cruise?

For individual travelers, we recommend booking 12 months in advance as a minimum, and 18 months for the best cabin selection on the most popular itineraries. For groups, we recommend booking as soon as a sailing opens, ideally 18 to 24 months out. Christmas 2027 is open now. It is not too early to start planning for 2028.

It is one of the best possible introductions to river cruising. The holiday atmosphere adds warmth and energy to every port, the shared experience of the markets gives the group an instant focus, and the ships are so well-organized that first-timers typically feel completely at ease within hours of boarding.

Most river cruise lines include all meals, at least wine and beer with dinner, coffee and soft drinks throughout the day, one or more shore excursions in each port, onboard entertainment, and port charges. Tauck and Uniworld are the most all-inclusive, with gratuities, premium spirits, and all excursions covered without exception. We give every group a clear breakdown of inclusions for any specific itinerary before anyone commits.

Cold. Typically 30 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the city and the year. Snow is possible and extraordinary when it happens, but not guaranteed. The cold is part of the experience. A mug of gluhwein tastes better when you actually need it. We send every guest in your group a detailed packing guide before departure.
